Newsflash: Report on the Gig at the Barfly
Stony Sleep

LATEST INFO: The Gig is off/was never going to happen. Blame the Barfly or NME, whoever got it wrong; i'm sorry about this, and anyone who went and ended up wasting their time/saw a band they didn't like, then I apologise. Also, Chris from Xposed also tells me he has a preview of the latest album, and it should be out pretty soon.

I was surfing the web one day, and decided to look up under all the search engines I knew, one of my favourite bands, of which I happened to know the newly signed bassist. After a few weeks of searching, I came up with two sites containing information which are both featured at the foot of this page, but sadly did not contain anything in quantity, excluding the interview of greater than a few lines, so I intend to fill in the gap for anyone who wishes to know more about a great band.

[I think I should warn you not to save in source, as I use a rather odd program to create my web pages, called Pagemill, which is a graphically orientated program, have not upgraded, and it contains some nasty bugs when you come to tags. Netscape understands it, but you probably won't as it places lots of wierd sizes, heights etc. where you would not expect it. Thankyou, back to the band.]

Yes, the band I am talking are, of course, the one and only "Stony Sleep", whose album entitled "Music For Chameleons" is a masterpiece, especially for fans of Nirvana, Radiohead or the Pixies, to which they have been compared. Signed to Indie label Big Cat, for a five album deal, despite rumours that they would sign to Columbia.

Who are Stony Sleep? Stony Sleep are a North London trio who amazed many big labels when they heard the deal that indie label 'Big Cat' had given them for a five album contract. They originally began when lead singer, guitarist, songwriter Ben Smith was only thirteen years old, with his brother Christian, and friend, Will Salmon. Christian plays drums in the band, and Will played bass when the band first started. This was until a disagreement between Ben and Will, unfortunately lead to Will being fired. This was after the recording of their album, 'Music for Chameleons' recorded in 1996, so Will is pictured in the album sleave.

Ben is now 19, Christian is 16, and so too Christian's friend and new bass player Lee Citron. It is Lee who is my indirect contact with the band. Most correspondence will actually go through Daniel Parmenter, close friend and ex-guitarist of his other band, which I was encouraged to promote.
This is the exclusive part, and the area which gets most complex; it is also the part that might contain no further development. Lee is the Bass player of both Stony Sleep and 'French Car and the Bolemic Wizard', or often referred to as 'French Car' for short. Christian is one of the guitarists in this band, and the drummer is Julius Nidu (I now know his full name, thanks to Alberto Gambaruto (a friend of mine/Dan)).

I will try to keep you up-to-date with info on this page, if anyone reads it. Anyway, French Car, are, according to Dan(iel Parmenter) trying to get a record deal with 'Touch and Go' and, if my memory from 19th August 1997, during Stony Sleep's gig at the Borderline, West London, serves me right, they are trying, at the same time, for a deal with Capitol. Latest which I've heard is that Dan wants Lee to help him form another band, which will be more like a metal band, as he is currently scurrying through issues of Kerrang!'s Musicians wanted sections, hoping to find a band he likes.

This page will be sorted out in the next couple of months/years?, so expect changes. I suspect that this introduction will be shortened/edited to solely about Stony Sleep, and I will have a link to the section specifically on the latest info, which I hope will feature interviews with the members of the band and their forthcoming releases, and even, sound samples if I can get hold of them. I might even make a link from the music section, specifically for French Car. Please send me info on what you think of the site and any ideas through my guestbook/comments/direct. I have changed the background colour, after i was told that the bright green clashed with the Album Colour green picture at the top of the screen, any opinions, please email me direct

Here are the sites aforementioned containing interviews with the band

Xposed interview with the band at Chris Houghton's Web page
Album Review from Xposed
Review of Stony Sleep's first gig with Lee from Xposed

Interview at the Blind Youth page

I do intend to do an interview with the band, but haven't had the time, at present due to the large quantity of work that I have had for my A Levels. I am also sorry that I could not bring you information of the band's Virgin Megastore/MTV tour around UK, but will try to provide some better coverage in the future. I think I have had enough response to keep the site going, but that does not mean that if you visit, you can feel the need not to sign, as i like to hear from everyone who visits.

The track that Lee wrote from the single, This Kitten is Clean, and the track is called "Lee's Concerto". It is an instrumental, but the interesting part comes at the very end, when Lee and Ben/Chris start mumbling. Ben/Chris says "Yeah, something like that". To which Lee replies, "No, it does actually end like that." Now, here it is. Just click the link. For PC users, it should save as a .wav file, and for Mac users, you will need ZipIt available from:
http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~franke/SoundApp/

track3.zip 922k

[I could have done a Quick Time Version, but thought that a wav file would make it the easiest for PC users, and a simple download for mac users; I know that if I used Quick Time, I will receive a host of emails from PC users asking how to open the file, and not being an expert in that field, I decided on this idea. Also, I was limited in ftp space]
